Ballerina is a strongly typed, concurrent general purpose language optimized for integration and writing network services and applications. It combines fundamental concepts and tools of distributed systems with direct support for network services, distributed transactions, reliable messaging, stream processing, security, and workflows. It is intended for commercial adoption and provides familiarity for users of Java, C#, and JavaScript. While it looks like Java and other popular languages in some ways, it is very different from those in fundamental ways.

This talk will explore how Ballerina is different, why it is different and how those differences give Ballerina an unfair advantage when it comes to writing resilient, performant and secure network services and applications.

Not all emerging technologies live up to their promise. Every year, as a part of annual planning, most organizations need to decide relevance, impact, and the probability of success of emerging technologies and pick their bets. As a solution to this problem, we present “Emerging Technology Analysis Canvas” (ETAC), a framework to assess an individual emerging technology as a solution to this problem. Inspired by the Business Model Canvas, It represents different aspects of technology visually on a single page. This approach includes a set of questions that probe the technology arranged around a logical narrative. The visual representation is concise, compact, and comprehensible in a glance.

There are many monitoring tools which let you know whether a system is functioning as expected. However, with observability, we can find an answer to the question of why a system is not functioning the way you want. In this sense, monitoring is just a subset of observability. Instrumentation also plays a principal role in making your system observable. For instance, the use of logging in systems (especially structured logging), collecting metrics in the runtime such as request count and response time, and the use of unique IDs for requests in order to do distributed tracing, are vital instrumentation techniques for observability. As a matter of fact, logging, monitoring and distributed tracing are considered as the three main ways to provide the observability in a system.

This session will focus on the observability of WSO2 products, the tools for observability and how WSO2 will make its next generation products observable by default using well-known standards like OpenTracing specification.

Within the last four years container technologies have become very popular. A lot of companies and developers are now using containers to ship their applications. Docker provides an easy-to-use packaging model to bundle the application.

However in many cases, a single container is not enough to run an application. It requires multiple containers, scaled into multiple host machines to become a production grade deployment. Kubernetes is an open source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It groups containers that make up an application into logical units for easy management and discovery.

To facilitate the integration requirements for these client-facing applications, we will define a solutions architecture that interacts with disparate back-end systems. On-premise only and cloud-only API management has their own perks. The cloud provides a rapid deployment model and low total cost of ownership while on-premise solutions offer higher performance, security, and compliance. To get the benefits of a SaaS environment, but with the greater control offered on-premise, you need to combine the two.

Deploying the API gateway next to your backend services not only reduces the network latency between the backend service and the gateway but also allows you to adhere to the security and compliance requirements of your organization. With this approach, you will be able to separate management from the traffic delivery layer. Which means if your services are deployed in a container management system like Kubernetes on any cloud such as Google, AWS, Azure, etc., the gateway can be deployed as a container on the CMS while other API management components are deployed in WSO2 API Cloud.

Security by design is applicable to the microservices paradigm the same way it is applicable to any software architecture. Monolithic applications handle end user authentication and authorization in a central manner, but with microservices, each independent module has to perform necessary end user authentication and authorization along with validating service-to-service trust.

Adding to that, the granularity of these services, and frequent interactions between them makes securing microservices more challenging. Using the same approach to solve security considerations of monolithic services is not applicable.

Moreover, current authentication and authorization protocols cannot directly address these requirements, so they need the flexibility of identity and access managers to adapt to the required changes.

In this session, Darshana will talk about the challenges of securing microservices, best practices to overcome them, and expectation of IAM in the microservices architecture.

Transactional behavior is a standard requirement for business applications. The microservices paradigm dictates that monolithic business applications should be broken into a collection of independently deployable services which come together to deliver the business functionality. This poses a new set of interesting challenges for microservice architects a developers. One of these challenges include managing transactions across microservices. In the monolithic app, all components and libraries execute within the same process so managing transactional behavior is less of a challenge. However, in the microservices world, the transaction context has to flow through across the network from service to service whenever transactional behavior is desired.

Ballerina is a new programming language that is designed to bring code-first agility to the challenge of integrating across endpoints. As we know, one of the fallacies of distributed computing is "the network is reliable". Resilience is the ability to recover to a working condition after being affected by a serious incident. Integration programmers have to be aware of such failures and also make their programs robust to deal with and recover from such failures.

Docker and Kubernetes are key elements of modern cloud native deployment automations. After building your microservices, the common practice is to create docker images and create YAML files to automate the deployment with Docker and Kubernetes. Writing these YAMLs and Dockerfile descriptors are really painful and error prone.

Ballerina understands the architecture around it; the compiler is environment aware with microservices directly deployable into infrastructures such as Docker and Kubernetes. This session will explore how Ballerina helps to orchestrate microservices into Kubernetes without writing YAMLs and Dockerfiles.

By leveraging a combination of different WSO2 products Engineering I.I. developed a leading solution for communicating with medical devices through medical device integration. Several different "bi-directional communication drivers" with medical devices have been developed, interfacing with devices ranging from wearables to complex monitoring systems based on several protocols.

The data comes from the device through WSO2 Message Broker to the MDI 'core' system that normalizes them into standard formats, and monitors data through complex event processing. This is used to feed supervised automated learning models. The supervised algorithms configured in the machine learning component warns the medical staff in advance of potential situations of degeneration of clinical conditions and allows them to take action. The data is exposed in an easy and safe way, thanks to the WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 Identity Server to the various solutions (EHR, Laboratory, EMS).

AGOS decided to create a new Service Oriented Architecture, DIANA, that relies on and exploits MASA Mash App and Service design patterns that are typically identified for Microservices architectures.

• Lindex faced a problem when trying to initiate multiple new digital channel development. Problem was with the existing monolith that powered existing web channel and the limitation of the team that supported it. Parallel client development was accomplished by choosing an API based approach for exposing functions. WSO2 API Manager was selected for management of clients, access control and usage limits was implemented. By complementing with WSO2 Identity Server Lindex positioned its digital landscape to further transformation of customer identification and authorization. Using domain driven design and bounded context thinking has enabled us to easier change parts of the monolith at different speeds.
